A kingdom was trapped. A huge monster sat in the mountain pass. Nobody could get out to trade with neighbouring kingdoms, and nobody could get in to visit or sell their wares. It was devastating the crops and pastures with its scorching breath, and eating the livestock. Something had to be done.
So the townspeople went to the king. He didn't know what to do, but he saddled his horse, put on his armour and sword, and started down the road towards the mountain pass. He heard its terrible roar echoing down the valley; "Go back, or I will eat you whole!"
Shaken, he kept on riding, step by step. And, lo and behold, the monster, at each step, began to shrink and shrink. Encouraged by this he started cantering, watching it grow smaller and smaller, the closer he got. When he finally reached the monster at full gallop, it was so tiny, he could scoop it up in his hand.
"Tell me your name!" ordered the king, as he dangled the quaking monster between finger and thumb.
"My name is fear," it squeaked with a wriggle.
And with one puff, the king blew that monster away.
